Roshibina Devi Shines Amid Controversy

Nagoya (Japan): Overcoming the controversy surrounding her selection for the national team at the Asian Games, prominent Wushu athlete Roshibina Devi ensured that India brought home a medal by clinching silver on Thursday.

Despite losing to the younger Divyanshi Choudhary in the selection trials, Roshibina earned her spot in the team after Choudhary sustained an injury. In the women’s 60kg sanda final, Roshibina faced a tough opponent in China’s Zhang Xiaoyu, ultimately losing 0-2.

Following her exclusion from the Indian squad, Divyanshi accused Roshibina of harassment.

At 25 years old, this marks Roshibina's third medal at the Asian Games, having previously secured a bronze in Jakarta-Palembang in 2018 and a silver at the 2023 Hangzhou Games.

On her path to the final, Roshibina defeated Vietnam’s 2023 world champion, Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy.

Her achievement provided a much-needed highlight for the Indian Wushu team, which faced a disappointing performance from other competitors.

In the men’s 56kg category, Aryan was eliminated in the quarterfinals, while Aparna in the women’s 52kg category was knocked out in the round of 16.

Vikrant Baliyan (Men’s 75kg) also lost in his opening match.

The Indian Taolu team did not manage to secure any podium finishes.

Langlentombi Devi Hanjabam scored a total of 18.839 in the women’s Nanquan and Nandao events, finishing in 9th place overall.

Nyeman Wangsu concluded her participation in the women’s Changquan event with a score of 9.573, placing her 15th.

Suraj Singh Mayanglambam competed in a highly competitive men’s Changquan final but ended up in 11th place.
