Celebrating Rohtak's Triumphs at the Asian Games

Rohtak is buzzing with pride as three local athletes have made headlines at the Asian Games taking place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Suchika Tariyal Hooda has secured a bronze medal in traditional mixed martial arts (MMA), while Deepika Sehrawat has set a new record by netting eight goals in India's overwhelming 19-0 victory against Uzbekistan. Additionally, Shafali Verma has marked her first T20 century.

These remarkable achievements by the trio have not only brought honor to their families but also to the entire district, state, and nation. Their success has ignited celebrations among relatives and garnered admiration from the local community.

“We had high hopes for a gold medal from Suchika, but her bronze has filled us with pride. She is expected to return on September 24, and we are planning a grand welcome for her. Suchika has previously earned four international medals in judo and represented India at both the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games in 2022,” shared her husband, Kapil Hooda, who works as a senior manager at Maruti Suzuki in Gurugram.

Suchika, originally from Rohtak city, is married to Kapil, who hails from Kiloi village. The couple currently resides in Dev Colony, Rohtak.

“Suchika serves as a junior coach with the Haryana Department of Sports. Her dedication to her sport has been commendable. We are all excited for her return so we can celebrate this achievement together,” Kapil added.

In a similar vein, the family of 22-year-old Deepika Sehrawat, from Bhaisuru village, is overjoyed by her impressive performance and looks forward to her continued success in future hockey matches.

Interestingly, Deepika's journey in sports began not on a hockey field but at a wrestling venue in Hisar, where she would accompany her older brother. Her father, Jagdish Sehrawat, was a laboratory assistant at Haryana Agricultural University and is now retired, residing in their native village.

Sports are a family affair for the Sehrawats. Deepika's elder brother, Pravesh, is a national-level wrestler who later joined the Indian Army, while her mother is a homemaker.

“At just eight years old, Deepika began visiting the Sports Authority of India facility in Hisar with her brother Pravesh. It was there that she discovered her passion for hockey. After observing the sport for nearly a year, she decided to pursue it herself, starting to play at the age of nine. She advanced through state and junior levels before joining the senior national team in 2022,” explained Jagdish.

Haryana's Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, along with former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and other leaders, took to social media to congratulate Deepika on her outstanding performance.
