Rohit Sharma Set to Make Historic ODI Return Against Afghanistan
Rohit Sharma's Comeback to International Cricket
Rohit Sharma is poised to return to the international cricket scene as India faces Afghanistan in the opening ODI of a three-match series on Saturday, June 13. After undergoing a fitness test, Rohit has rejoined the squad following a hamstring injury sustained during IPL 2026. Although he made a brief appearance in the playing XI as an Impact Player, he is now ready to open the innings alongside Shubman Gill in this ODI series. His participation will mark a significant milestone in his career.
Rohit Sharma to Become the Oldest Indian ODI Player
At 39 years and 44 days old, Rohit Sharma is set to become the oldest Indian to play in an ODI. The current record is held by Mohinder Amarnath, who was 39 years and 36 days old during his last ODI in October 1989, where he served as vice-captain of the 1983 World Cup-winning team. Sachin Tendulkar, another cricket legend, played his final ODI at the age of 38 in March 2012. If Rohit continues his career until the 2027 ODI World Cup, he could become the first Indian to play an ODI at the age of 40.
Rohit Sharma's ODI Journey
Rohit Sharma made his ODI debut in 2007 and had a fluctuating presence in the national team until 2013. After facing challenges in the middle order, MS Dhoni assigned him the opening role during a home ODI series against England in January 2013. Rohit seized this opportunity, forming a formidable opening partnership with Shikhar Dhawan, which lasted until 2022. As an opener, Rohit has amassed an impressive 11,577 runs in 282 matches, including 33 centuries. He is the only player to have scored more than one double century in ODIs, with three to his name. Under his captaincy, India clinched the 2025 Champions Trophy and reached the finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
