Rohit Sharma Celebrates Historic World Cup Win for India's Women's Team
Rohit Sharma Reflects on Women's Team Triumph
In New Delhi, former captain of the Indian men's cricket team, Rohit Sharma, shared his thoughts on the women's team achieving their first World Cup victory earlier this month. He expressed empathy for the emotional journey the players endured after facing numerous challenges over the years.
Under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, the Indian women's team secured their inaugural World Cup by defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the final match.
During the announcement event for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 schedule, Rohit reminisced about his conversation with captain Harmanpreet regarding coach Amol Muzumdar, whom he has known for years. He was not surprised to learn that Amol maintained his composure and passion despite the team's three consecutive losses in the group stage, including a setback against England. Rohit noted the team's disappointment at that time but felt immense joy witnessing their remarkable comeback to clinch the title.
Rohit stated, "Observing from the outside is different from being part of the team. I understand the emotional toll of facing setbacks year after year without winning the World Cup. When I was there, I could see the joy on everyone's faces. These are the moments we strive for and work hard to achieve. I asked Harman about Amol's demeanor during the tournament, and I wasn't surprised by her response. Amol is deeply passionate about the game and the team."
He added, "Even though I wasn't present, I could sense the atmosphere in the dressing room after the England match. Seeing them lift the World Cup was an incredible experience."
Harmanpreet Kaur also shared her feelings about the victory, noting that even a month later, the excitement remains fresh. She mentioned how people continuously remind her of the win, prompting her to reflect on the long wait and the frustrations the team faced over the years.
"It's been a month since our World Cup win, but whenever I try to relax, people keep talking about it and expressing their excitement. We waited for so many years and faced so much frustration. Winning now means everything to us. I don't want to move on from that moment; it keeps replaying in my mind. It's truly special," Harmanpreet expressed after their historic win.
