Rob Key Addresses Liam Livingstone's Concerns Over Team Management
Key Responds to Livingstone's Criticism
London [UK], March 25: Rob Key, the managing director of the England cricket team, has addressed all-rounder Liam Livingstone's claims that the management shows little concern for sidelined players. Key firmly stated that a player of Livingstone's caliber is certainly in contention for selection.
Livingstone, who has been absent from international cricket since England's disappointing ICC Champions Trophy campaign last year under former captain Jos Buttler, recently shared his frustrations in an interview with a sports news outlet. He criticized the management, including Key and head coach Brendon McCullum, for allegedly neglecting players who are not part of the active squad. He also expressed disappointment over Key's lack of communication regarding his central contract, claiming that Key had more pressing matters to attend to.
In response to these remarks, Key defended his communication with Livingstone, acknowledging that it's common for players to feel upset in such situations. Speaking to Sky Sports after retaining his position following a review of England's 1-4 Ashes series defeat to Australia, Key remarked, 'I won't delve into private discussions, but there is another perspective to this conversation. I assured Liam that there is no way a player of his talent would not be considered for selection.'
Key mentioned that Livingstone is being evaluated for a potential recall for the upcoming limited-overs tour to Sri Lanka, ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup in January. He emphasized the need for Livingstone to demonstrate that he is back to his best form and scoring runs.
'We discussed his inclusion for the Sri Lanka series. We genuinely want to see him return to form and contribute to the England team,' Key stated. He also recalled that Livingstone was once considered for captaincy during a series against the West Indies in late 2024, highlighting the high regard in which he is held.
Livingstone had previously suggested that the team management operates like a closed group, where only selected players receive attention. Key refuted this notion, promising a shift in behavior following some off-field issues last winter.
'In these roles, especially during tough times, it's inevitable that some players will feel neglected. That's part of the job,' Key explained. He added that it's impossible to please everyone in leadership positions.
'However, players like Liam Livingstone have opportunities to showcase their skills in county cricket and earn a spot on the England team,' he concluded.
Livingstone has arrived in India for a crucial IPL season, having been acquired by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for Rs 13 crores last season. He will face his former team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), on Sunday, where he previously secured a title.
In 2022, Livingstone had a standout season with Punjab Kings (PBKS), accumulating 437 runs in 14 innings at an average of 36.42 and a strike rate exceeding 182, including four fifties. However, his performance has declined over the past three seasons, with only 502 runs in 27 matches at an average of 22.81.
Last year, he struggled for England, scoring just 74 runs in five T20I matches. Nevertheless, his impressive performances in the domestic circuit and The Hundred helped him regain interest from IPL franchises ahead of the auction.
In The Hundred, he scored 241 runs at an average of 40.16, while in the Vitality Blast, he amassed 260 runs at an average of 52, showcasing his potential to bounce back.
