Rishabh Pant Resigns as Captain of Lucknow Super Giants After Disappointing IPL Seasons

Rishabh Pant has resigned as captain of the Lucknow Super Giants following a dismal IPL 2026 season, where the team finished last with only 4 wins. This decision comes after a series of underwhelming performances, including a poor showing in IPL 2025. Pant's record as captain reveals a troubling trend, with a high losing percentage that places him among the least successful leaders in the franchise's history. As LSG looks for a new captain, the team reflects on a challenging period marked by missed opportunities and disappointing results.

Rishabh Pant Steps Down as Captain

Rishabh Pant has stepped down from his role as captain of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) following a disappointing performance in the IPL 2026 season. The team ended up at the bottom of the points table, securing only 4 victories out of 14 matches, resulting in a total of 8 points and a net run rate of -0.740. This follows a similarly poor showing in IPL 2025, where LSG also failed to progress beyond the initial rounds.

Pant was acquired by LSG for a staggering Rs 27 crore during the IPL 2025 mega-auction, taking over the captaincy after the franchise released KL Rahul. In the first half of IPL 2025, LSG managed to win 4 matches, but their performance declined in the latter half, finishing with 6 wins and 8 losses, placing them fourth behind the Mumbai Indians, who had 16 points.

The situation worsened in IPL 2026, where LSG began with a promising start, winning 2 of their first three games. However, they could only secure 2 more wins in the following 11 matches, ultimately finishing last. Their campaign concluded with consecutive losses to the Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings.

Rishabh Pant's Captaincy Record

Under Rishabh Pant's leadership, LSG achieved only 10 victories in 28 matches, suffering 17 defeats, which gives him a losing percentage of 60.71, making him the least successful captain in the franchise's history. In contrast, KL Rahul led the team to 20 wins and 17 losses across 37 matches, while Krunal Pandya managed 3 wins and 2 losses. Nicholas Pooran captained LSG in just one match, which they won.
