Rinku Singh Appointed Regional Sports Officer Amid IPL Leadership Role
Rinku Singh's New Role and Achievements
In a recent event, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that Rinku Singh, the celebrated Indian cricketer, has been appointed as a Regional Sports Officer by the state government. This recognition comes after Rinku's remarkable performance during IPL 2023, where he hit five consecutive sixes against Yash Dayal of the Gujarat Titans, leading the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a thrilling chase of over 200 runs.
Rinku's accolades include being a gold medalist at the Asian Games, an Asia Cup champion, and a T20 World Cup winner with the Indian team. His explosive batting style has been pivotal in securing numerous victories for the Men in Blue.
During a ceremony aimed at honoring international medalists and distributing appointment letters, CM Yogi highlighted Uttar Pradesh's pioneering initiative to prioritize athletes in government roles. He stated, "Uttar Pradesh is the first state to prioritize athletes in government service, having issued over 500 appointment letters to athletes for various police positions. Rinku Singh's outstanding cricket performance has earned him this role as a Regional Sports Officer, although he is currently engaged with the KKR camp for IPL preparations."
Leadership Role in KKR
In addition to his new government position, Rinku Singh has been appointed as the vice-captain of KKR for the upcoming IPL 2026 season. He will support Ajinkya Rahane in this leadership capacity, taking over from Venkatesh Iyer, who was recently signed by the Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs 7 crore.
The announcement was made by KKR CEO Venky Mysore during the Knights Unplugged 3.0 event in Kolkata. Mysore expressed excitement about Rinku's new role, stating, "We are thrilled to announce Rinku Singh as our Vice-captain. He has been a vital part of KKR since joining in 2018."
Challenges and Performance Insights
Despite his leadership role, Rinku's recent form has raised concerns. He had a disappointing T20 World Cup 2026, managing only 24 runs across five innings. This period was particularly challenging for him, as he faced the loss of his father, Khanchand, to cancer. Nevertheless, Rinku's resilience shone through as he returned to the squad after fulfilling family obligations, showcasing an inspiring narrative from the tournament.
Since his breakout season in 2023, where he scored 474 runs in 14 innings at an impressive average of 59.25, Rinku's performance has dipped. He has accumulated just 374 runs in 22 innings since then, averaging 23.37 with a top score of 38*. Overall, Rinku has played 59 matches for KKR, amassing 1,099 runs at an average of 30.53.
In his international career, Rinku has played 45 T20Is for India, scoring 665 runs at an average of 39.11, with a strike rate exceeding 155 and three fifties to his name.
