Rinku Singh Appointed Regional Sports Officer Amid IPL Leadership Role
Rinku Singh's New Role and Achievements
In a recent announcement, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath of Uttar Pradesh praised Rinku Singh, the Indian cricketer, for being appointed as a Regional Sports Officer by the state government. Rinku gained fame during IPL 2023 when he hit five consecutive sixes off Gujarat Titans' Yash Dayal in a thrilling chase for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). His impressive performances have also led him to win gold at the Asian Games, the Asia Cup, and the T20 World Cup with the Indian team.
Rinku has played a crucial role as a finisher for the Men in Blue, contributing significantly to several victories.
During a ceremony for distributing appointment letters and rewards to international medalists, CM Yogi highlighted Uttar Pradesh's pioneering initiative to prioritize athletes in government jobs. He stated, "Uttar Pradesh is the first state to prioritize athletes in government service. We have issued over 500 appointment letters to athletes for various police roles. Rinku Singh has received his letter due to his outstanding cricket performance and achievements in the Asian Games. He is currently attending the KKR camp for IPL preparations."
Leadership Role in KKR
Rinku Singh has been appointed as the vice-captain of KKR for the upcoming IPL 2026 season, stepping into a leadership position alongside Ajinkya Rahane. This role was previously held by Venkatesh Iyer, who was acquired by Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs 7 crore before the season.
The announcement was made by KKR CEO Venky Mysore during the Knights Unplugged 3.0 event in Kolkata. "We are thrilled to announce Rinku Singh as our Vice-captain. He has been a vital part of KKR since joining in 2018," Mysore stated.
Challenges and Performance
Despite his leadership role, Rinku's recent form has raised concerns for KKR. He had a disappointing T20 World Cup 2026, managing only 24 runs across five innings. Tragically, during the tournament, Rinku lost his father, Khanchand, to cancer. After fulfilling his familial duties, he returned to the squad, showcasing resilience in a challenging time.
Since his breakout season in 2023, where he scored 474 runs in 14 innings at an impressive average of 59.25, Rinku's performance has seen a decline. He has accumulated just 374 runs in 22 innings since then, averaging 23.37, with a top score of 38*. Overall, Rinku has played 59 matches for KKR, amassing 1,099 runs at an average of 30.53.
In addition to his IPL career, Rinku has played two ODIs for India, scoring 55 runs, and has participated in 45 T20Is, where he has scored 665 runs at an average of 39.11, with a strike rate exceeding 155 and three fifties.
