Ricky Ponting Discusses Cameron Green's Role Amid Ashes Challenges
Ponting Reflects on Australia's Ashes Strategy
In New Delhi, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has shared insights on the ongoing Ashes series, highlighting the challenges faced by the team as they evaluate their lineup. He pointed out that the confidence placed in Cameron Green has had a ripple effect on other players, particularly Beau Webster, who finds himself in a tough spot.
Ponting remarked, "Beau Webster has unfortunately been the player most affected this Australian summer. He performed well in his debut match, but faced tough conditions in the West Indies, where he was dismissed by some nearly unplayable deliveries. An early injury also sidelined him during crucial Shield matches, limiting his preparation compared to players like Marnus Labuschagne."
He suggested that Webster could potentially take over the number 7 position from Josh Inglis, which would provide additional bowling support. "I feel for Beau; he might be considered for that No. 7 slot. They could opt to replace Inglis with Webster to enhance their bowling options," Ponting explained.
Since making his debut earlier this year in the final Test against India in Sydney, Webster has shown promise, accumulating 381 runs and eight wickets across seven Tests, including four half-centuries.
Despite the discussions surrounding Webster, Ponting emphasized the importance of patience regarding Green's future. He stated, "I believe they will continue to back him. They value what he brings to the team. After around thirty Test matches, they are likely to stick with him and seek ways to maximize his potential at the Test level."
Cameron Green has participated in 35 Tests since his debut against India in Adelaide five years ago, scoring 1,641 runs at an average nearing 33, alongside taking 37 wickets.
The fourth Test of the Ashes series is set to commence in Melbourne on December 26.
