Ricky Ponting Backs Rishabh Pant for Captaincy in Crucial Test Against South Africa
Ponting's Confidence in Pant's Leadership
New Delhi [India] - November 21: Ricky Ponting, the former captain of Australia, expresses confidence in Rishabh Pant's ability to lead India in the pivotal Test match against South Africa in Guwahati. Following India's 30-run loss in the first Test at Eden Gardens, Pant is stepping up to captain the team, especially with Shubman Gill sidelined due to injury. This match is crucial for India to equalize the series.
Ponting, who has collaborated with Pant during the IPL, acknowledged the difficulties of taking on the role of a stand-in captain after a recent defeat. However, he believes that Pant's experience as a wicketkeeper will enable him to effectively read the game and adapt to changing match scenarios.
“Filling in as a temporary captain after a loss is never straightforward. Nevertheless, Rishabh has gained considerable experience as a Test player. His role as a wicketkeeper allows him to perceive the game's dynamics and developments,” Ponting stated, as reported by ICC.
He further noted, “Pant has been performing at the IPL level for several years, particularly with the Delhi Capitals. I am confident he will manage this situation well.”
Pant and Ponting previously shared a captain-coach dynamic at the Delhi Capitals before Pant transitioned to the Lucknow Super Giants and Ponting to the Punjab Kings.
While Pant has extensive experience in leading white-ball teams, this will mark his inaugural captaincy for the Test squad at the age of 28.
“It will be fascinating to observe how he approaches his captaincy and whether it influences his batting style. I believe he will rise to the occasion. One aspect that often goes unmentioned regarding these younger Indian players is their readiness for Test matches and leadership roles, thanks to their experiences in the IPL,” Ponting remarked.
“For many of these players, the IPL is nearly as significant as a Test match due to the large crowds and the intense scrutiny involved. Today's players are generally more prepared for leadership responsibilities and the weight of such situations compared to players from 15 years ago. Therefore, I am confident Rishabh will handle it well,” concluded the former Australian cricketer.
The second Test is set to commence on November 22 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.
