Jadeja's Mindset Shift in Test Matches

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], August 4: Cheteshwar Pujara, a former Indian cricketer, has shed light on the evolving mindset of all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in Test cricket. Pujara noted that Jadeja has transitioned from a focus on limiting runs to actively seeking wickets with every delivery.

Jadeja is set to rejoin the Indian squad after missing the recent one-off Test against Afghanistan, as he prepares for the upcoming two-Test series in Sri Lanka starting August 15.

In a discussion on JioStar's 'Follow The Blues', Pujara, who has played alongside Jadeja for many years, emphasized the bowler's newfound confidence in his abilities. He mentioned that Jadeja is now concentrating on bowling in line with the stumps to secure wickets.

“Previously, Jadeja's strategy was primarily about preventing runs, especially in red-ball cricket. He would only aim for wickets if the pitch offered assistance. However, he has now recognized his strengths and is adjusting his bowling style accordingly,” Pujara explained.

“In every match, he aims to deliver the ball in line with the stumps to dismiss the batsman. His earlier approach was more defensive, but now he approaches each ball with the intent to take a wicket. This mental shift is crucial for his game,” he added.

Throughout his 89 Test matches, Jadeja has claimed 348 wickets at an impressive average of 25.11, including 17 four-wicket hauls, 15 five-wicket hauls, and three ten-wicket matches, with his best performance being 7/42. Additionally, he has amassed 4,095 runs in 133 innings, averaging 38.27, with six centuries and eight fifties. Jadeja's consistency with both bat and ball has solidified his status as one of the premier all-rounders in contemporary cricket.

With upcoming Test series against New Zealand (two away matches) and Australia (five home matches), Jadeja is on the verge of reaching 400 Test wickets. Achieving this milestone would make him only the fifth Indian bowler to do so.

Jadeja last played for India in Tests during the series against South Africa in November of last year. His performance in 2022 was below his usual standards, with only 25 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 38.20, and his best figures being 4/50.

Currently, India ranks fifth in the World Test Championship standings, having secured four victories and suffered four defeats in nine matches, resulting in a Points Percentage (PCT) of 48.150.

The updated Indian squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka includes: Shubman Gill (Captain), KL Rahul (Vice-Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sai Sudharsan*, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Devdutt Padikkal, Saransh Jain, and Auqib Nabi.
