Ashwin's Unexpected Retirement Explained

Ravichandran Ashwin has addressed the swirling rumors regarding Gautam Gambhir's alleged influence on his retirement from international cricket. The renowned spinner made the surprising announcement during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) after the third Test. Following a draw in the Gabba Test, which left the series tied at 1-1, Ashwin returned to India, prompting speculation about his decision. Many cricket analysts expressed concern over how the team management had treated him. Ashwin revealed that after participating in just one of the three Tests, he sensed that his time with the team was coming to an end. The 39-year-old expressed contentment with his choice, emphasizing the need for his successor to have the opportunity to grow. "I believe one of my greatest strengths is my decision-making. Whether it's deemed right or wrong is open for discussion, but ultimately, it's my life, and I must live it on my own terms. The moment in Perth, when both Jaddu and I were the primary spinners, and Washy played that match, it became clear to me that my time was up. If someone else is to step into that role, they deserve their chance. I’m not the type to linger around hoping for a comeback. I've experienced too much in my life to waste time on such matters," Ashwin stated during the RevSports Conclave.

R Ashwin On The Gautam Gambhir Factor Behind Test Retirement

When questioned about the rumors suggesting Gambhir pressured him into retiring, Ashwin clarified that he harbors no resentment towards the Indian head coach. He acknowledged that if Gambhir felt it was time for him, Virat Kohli, or Rohit Sharma to move on, he understood that perspective. Ashwin noted that while players might feel bitterness, it’s essential to recognize that they are not invincible. "If anyone should feel upset with Gautam, it would be me, considering I returned during his second or third tour as coach. Gautam has responsibilities, and if he believes I or others should transition out, that’s acceptable. I might feel hurt, and that’s valid, but if you step back, it’s clear he has a job to do, and perhaps I don’t fit into his plans anymore. I’ve always aimed to let go of my ego, and I’m still working on that. We are all human, and it’s natural to feel this way. However, if you detach from those feelings, things become clearer. Sometimes, due to the admiration we receive in this country, we mistakenly think we are invincible, which is far from the truth," Ashwin added.

Ashwin stands as India's second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, boasting an impressive tally of 537 wickets across 106 matches, including 37 five-wicket hauls, tying him for second-most in Test history alongside Shane Warne. He has also scored six centuries with the bat.
