Ramon Calderon Discusses the Missed Opportunity of Messi and Ronaldo at Real Madrid
The Dream Team That Never Was
In the realm of football, the debate over who is the greatest player of all time has persisted for nearly twenty years. At one point, there was even speculation about the potential of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo playing together at Real Madrid.
Ramon Calderon, the former president of Real Madrid, has now shed light on whether the club ever genuinely contemplated bringing these two legends together at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Calderon expressed, "I would have loved to see that happen, but it was simply not feasible since Messi was with Barcelona, and they would never allow him to leave unless he took the initiative, similar to what Cristiano did at Manchester United. Messi was content at Barcelona, which made it impossible. It’s unfortunate because having the two best players in the world on the same team would have been incredible," as reported by a Media House.
He further elaborated that Real Madrid had been in talks for approximately two years to acquire Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United. While United was reluctant to let him go, Ronaldo's eagerness to join Madrid ultimately facilitated the transfer. Calderon noted that signing Ronaldo, who was regarded as one of the top players alongside Messi, was an opportunity the club could not afford to overlook.
"We were in discussions for two years. Naturally, Manchester United didn’t want to lose him, but the player had his heart set on moving. It’s well-known that players like Cristiano tend to go where they truly want to be; it’s nearly impossible to keep them against their will. I was there, and like anyone else would have done, I seized the opportunity. At that time, he was the best player in the world alongside Messi, so it made perfect sense to grab the chance to sign him," Calderon explained.
Despite the remarkable success Ronaldo enjoyed at Real Madrid, Calderon believes that his exit in 2018 was a misstep for everyone involved. He suggested that the growing tensions between Ronaldo and club president Florentino Perez strained their relationship, ultimately leading to Ronaldo's record-setting transfer to Juventus, where he struggled to replicate his Spanish success.
"I think it was a mistake on both sides. The relationship was not good from the start, and it worsened over time. The president underestimated the possibility of a club paying 100 million euros, but there was indeed a club willing to do so, leaving him with no choice but to accept the player's departure. The player never fully adapted to any club outside of Real Madrid, and finding someone like Cristiano is nearly impossible," Calderon concluded.
