Austria's Coach Praises Spain After Knockout Defeat

Los Angeles [US], July 3: Ralf Rangnick, the head coach of Austria, has expressed his belief that Spain is a formidable contender for the FIFA World Cup 2026, labeling them as the toughest opponent his team has encountered in the tournament thus far.

Following Austria's loss to Spain in the Round of 32 on Thursday (local time), Rangnick commended Luis de la Fuente's squad for showcasing their finest performance of the competition, as reported by a French news outlet.

Rangnick stated, "Spain undoubtedly delivered their best performance of the tournament today. I might be taking a risk by saying this, but I wouldn't be surprised if we faced not only the reigning European champions but also the future world champions. If they maintain this level of play, defeating Spain will be extremely challenging."

Despite the setback, the Austrian coach noted that his team remained competitive until Spain scored their second goal and praised his players for their resilience in the face of adversity.

"Until their second goal, we were still in the game. With a bit of luck, we could have even hoped to equalize. The team once again showed solidarity, despite the numerous challenges, including the withdrawal of Christoph Baumgartner, the injury to Phillipp Mwene, and Stefan Posch's broken jaw," he added.

Spain showcased a commanding performance, defeating Austria 3-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32, marking their first knockout victory in regular or extra time since winning the title in 2010.

Mikel Oyarzabal shone with two goals, while Pedro Porro netted his first international goal, securing a spot in the Round of 16 for Luis de la Fuente's team.

Marc Cucurella contributed with two assists, and Spain maintained their impressive defensive record with a fourth consecutive clean sheet, having yet to concede a goal in the tournament.

Austria struggled to handle Spain's relentless attacking pressure, despite goalkeeper Alexander Schlager making several key saves.

Spain dominated possession throughout the match, with teenage talents Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi becoming the first Under-20 duo to start a World Cup knockout match for a single nation since Brazil's Pele and Jose Altafini in 1958.

This victory propels the reigning European champions into a Round of 16 matchup against Portugal, while Austria's journey concludes after reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time since 1954.
