The match will be pivotal in shaping the title race as both teams strive for success in this decisive phase of the league.

Exciting Kick-off for IFL Championship Phase

Ludhiana (Punjab) [India] - On April 23, Rajasthan United FC will take on Sreenidi Deccan FC in the inaugural match of the Championship phase of the Indian Football League (IFL) 2025-26. This highly anticipated fixture will take place at the Namdhari Football Stadium in Sri Bhaini Sahib, starting at 18:30 IST.

With the group stage now behind them, the Championship phase will feature the top six teams competing in a round-robin format. Each team will face one another once, and the squad with the highest points at the end will be crowned champions, as outlined in an official IFL announcement.

Rajasthan and Sreenidi enter this crucial phase ranked third and fourth, respectively, both eager to close the gap on the league leaders, Diamond Harbour FC. This match presents a vital opportunity for both teams to enhance their standings in the title race.

Rajasthan comes into this match following a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory against Dempo SC, with second-half goals from Gerard Artigas and Thomyo L. Shimray. The Desert Warriors currently hold 17 points from nine matches and can potentially reach a total of 32 points, likely needing at least four wins from their remaining games to maintain a serious title challenge. A win in this match would elevate them to 20 points, just two behind the leaders, with head-to-head results becoming crucial if teams end up tied.

This season, Rajasthan has netted 13 goals, with Amadou Soukouna leading the charge with four goals. Their attacking strategy heavily relies on the flanks, where Naoba Meitei and Artigas provide width and creativity. Artigas’ skill in tight spaces complements Meitei’s vision and ability to deliver precise crosses into the box.

Head coach Vikrant Sharma emphasized the importance of this opportunity for his players, stating, “If the boys truly aspire to play in the Indian Super League without switching clubs, this is their chance to shine. Why look elsewhere when you can elevate your own club to the ISL? Nothing surpasses that. The players understand this.”

Naoba Meitei shared insights on the team’s mindset as they approach this critical stage, saying, “All the teams in the top six possess quality, but we have faith in our abilities. We are prepared to compete and will give our utmost in every match.”

On the other hand, Sreenidi Deccan FC will be looking to bounce back after a 2-0 loss to Real Kashmir FC in their last league match, a setback that disrupted their momentum heading into the championship phase.

Currently sitting on 15 points, Sreenidi Deccan is still in contention but faces a challenging path ahead. With a maximum possible score of 30 points, they will likely need four wins along with favorable outcomes in other matches to stay in the race. A victory in this match would propel them above Rajasthan to second place with 18 points, narrowing the gap to four points behind Diamond Harbour.

Their campaign has been characterized by solid defensive organization. Sreenidi has scored only 10 goals, the lowest in the league, but boasts the best defensive record, having conceded just eight. Fabrice Kah has been a key attacking player, contributing three goals from the flank, while center-back Hadi Idrissou has added two goals, posing a threat during set pieces. However, star striker David Castaneda has only found the net once in nine appearances, an area the team aims to improve.

Head coach Carlos Vaz Pinto acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating, “Rajasthan United is a formidable team and among the best in the league. This match will be tough for both sides. We respect them, but we believe we can secure another win. The nature of games in this phase is different, as every team is vying for the title. Teams may adopt different strategies now, aiming for three points instead of settling for one. This could create more opportunities, but it depends on the opponent’s tactics. We must be at our best to claim three points.”

Goalkeeper Kamaljit Singh stressed the importance of focusing on the immediate challenge, saying, “We are taking it one game at a time. Right now, our entire focus is on tomorrow’s match. This is crucial for us, and we will approach it with that mindset. We are going for all three points because if we don’t win, it will be very difficult for us in the league. We will give our all for sure.”

As both teams aim to gain early momentum, Friday’s match could play a pivotal role in determining the trajectory of the title race.
