Rain Disrupts First ODI Between India and Afghanistan in Dharamshala
Rain Delays First ODI Match
The opening match of the ODI series between India and Afghanistan has faced significant delays due to rain at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamshala. Persistent heavy rainfall since last night has hindered the commencement of play, raising concerns about the possibility of a complete washout. Fortunately, the stadium is equipped with an excellent drainage system, which should facilitate a quick drying of the outfield once the rain subsides. This venue features a sub-air drainage system similar to that of the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, providing hope for some cricket action today, even if it means a shortened match. To achieve a result, at least 20 overs must be played.
Cut-off Time for 20-Over Match
For a minimum 20-over match to commence in Dharamshala, play must begin by 6:32 PM IST. If conditions do not improve, the match will be called off, leaving the series tied at 0-0 as there are no reserve days allocated for bilateral series. Since 2:30 PM IST, overs have been lost, making a full 50-over match unfeasible. This series marks the first bilateral ODI encounter between India and Afghanistan, with previous meetings occurring only during the Cricket World Cup or the Asia Cup. The teams have, however, faced each other in a T20I series in India in January 2024 and have played two one-off Test matches in June 2018 and June 2026. The second ODI is set for June 17 at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, followed by the final match on June 20 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
