Rahul Chahar Joins Surrey for Crucial County Championship Match
Chahar's New Role with Surrey
New Delhi, September 23: Indian spinner Rahul Chahar has signed with Surrey for their final match of the season against Hampshire at the Utilita Bowl this week. Currently, Surrey is trailing Nottinghamshire by 14 points, making this match critical for their chances. To stay in contention, Surrey must secure a victory while hoping Nottinghamshire earns fewer than 11 points in their concluding game against Warwickshire at Trent Bridge.
The 26-year-old leg-spinner was registered for the concluding phase of the County Championship in early September. He has been included in the squad for the upcoming match against Hampshire, having not participated in the previous two home games at the Kia Oval against Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire.
Chahar has been a consistent performer for Rajasthan in the Ranji Trophy and has represented India in seven white-ball matches. He boasts an impressive record of 87 wickets in 24 first-class games, with an average of 26.12 and best match figures of 9/148.
His IPL journey began with the Rising Pune Supergiants, but it was with the Mumbai Indians that he truly flourished, contributing significantly to their victories in the 2019 and 2020 seasons. He later joined the Punjab Kings in 2022 and played last season with the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Chahar stated, “I’m thrilled to join Surrey for this week’s match. I aim to make a significant impact and assist the team in their final game of the season.”
His addition to the team comes after Surrey lost their two spinners, Will Jacks and Cam Steel, due to injuries. Alec Stewart, the club's high-performance advisor, remarked, “Bringing Rahul into the squad provides us with another spin option at the Utilita Bowl. We anticipated missing players during this final stretch of the season and planned accordingly, considering the playing conditions and our opponents.”
Stewart also noted that they had initially planned for Sai Kishore to return for the latter part of the season, but a finger injury requiring surgery has rendered him unavailable.
