Ashwin's Concerns Over CSK's Handling of Injuries

R Ashwin has expressed his disappointment with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) regarding their management of Ayush Mhatre's injury. The team's season has been plagued by various injuries, including MS Dhoni's absence and Dewald Brevis's missed matches. Mhatre's injury occurred during a match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Ashwin was taken aback that CSK did not substitute him despite his evident struggle. He remarked, "It couldn’t have been a cramp since he didn’t field at all. If it was an injury, the physios assessed him, and he was limping badly. Why was he asked to continue playing?" Ashwin questioned the decision, noting that Mhatre has been a standout player this season and should have been handled with more care.

Concerns Over Mhatre's Recovery

Ashwin fears that Mhatre may be sidelined for an extended period, suggesting that if it is a Grade 2 injury, recovery could take up to six weeks. He observed that Mhatre had been playing with a knee strap and had been utilized as an Impact Player, raising questions about his fitness and fielding capabilities.

Criticism of CSK's Injury Management Practices

Ashwin's Critique of CSK's Approach

Furthermore, Ashwin did not hold back in criticizing CSK's overall injury management, citing the example of Deepak Chahar. He noted that while Chahar struggled with injuries at CSK, he managed to play a full season with the Mumbai Indians. "CSK has faced a string of injuries season after season. Deepak Chahar played only 16 games for CSK over three years, yet he played 14 consecutive matches for MI. Effective injury management should begin long before the season starts and continue throughout the year," Ashwin stated.

Impact of Mhatre's Injury on CSK

A Major Blow for CSK

If Mhatre is confirmed to be out of action, it would significantly impact CSK, as he has been one of their key performers. In the match against SRH, he scored a quick 30 runs off 13 balls, helping CSK to a strong start before his injury led to a batting collapse, resulting in a loss by 10 runs.
