Injury Sidelines Quinten Timber

Texas [US], June 19: Quinten Timber, the midfielder for the Netherlands, will miss the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 Group F clash with Sweden on Saturday (Indian Standard Time) due to an injury sustained during training.

Team officials have confirmed that the 25-year-old experienced a mild concussion after a collision in Thursday's practice session. Medical personnel evaluated him and determined that he would not be fit for selection as a precautionary measure.

"As soon as Quinten had the ball, I made a run deep," said his teammate Teun Koopmeiners in an interview with Dutch media. "He intended to chip it to me, and then the incident occurred. It wasn't a severe collision, but caution is necessary."

In their last match against Japan, the Dutch team seemed poised to secure all three points after captain Virgil van Dijk and Crysencio Summerville each scored to give their side the lead, with Keito Nakamura having equalized for Japan earlier. However, a deflected shot from Daichi Kamada in the dying moments of the game earned Japan a 2-2 draw.

Following the match, Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman defended his tactical choices and substitutions after Japan's late equalizer in their opening Group F encounter on Sunday (Local Time).

Koeman faced criticism for making a triple substitution just six minutes after Summerville had restored the lead in the 64th minute. The Dutch manager opted to strengthen his defense by adding a third center-back, but Japan responded effectively and managed to equalize under sustained pressure.

Despite the draw, Koeman stood firm on his decisions. "There was also an issue with pressure on the flanks. If you analyze the game, we didn't defend well on both goals," he stated to reporters.

"Football can be unpredictable; after Japan scored their second goal, they also began to defend. We could have netted a third goal, so I don't regret my choices," he added.

The Dutch coach recognized that his team did not meet expectations and emphasized the need for improvement as the tournament continues. "We can certainly perform better, and we must evolve throughout the tournament. This was not our best showing, and we had hoped to win the first match," he concluded.
