Vantaa [Finland], October 10: PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist and prominent Indian badminton player, faced elimination from the Arctic Open 2026 after a hard-fought match against Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon in the women's singles quarterfinals on Friday. This defeat marked the end of India's participation in the BWF Super 500 tournament.
Seeded sixth, Sindhu lost the match with scores of 21-11, 19-21, 21-18 against the top-seeded Intanon, a former world champion, in a thrilling three-game encounter, as reported by Olympics.com.
This loss was particularly significant as it represented Sindhu's sixth consecutive defeat to Intanon, who now leads their overall rivalry with a record of 10 wins to 4.
In the first game, Sindhu struggled to find her footing early on, allowing Intanon to take a 5-1 lead. Although Sindhu managed to narrow the gap to 11-8 at the break, Intanon regained momentum after the interval, winning 10 out of the next 13 points to clinch the game.
However, Sindhu bounced back in the second game, taking the lead at the interval and extending it to 17-14. Despite Intanon's attempt to rally with a five-point streak, Sindhu responded with four consecutive points, forcing a decisive third game.
The final game was tightly contested, with both players tied at 17-17. Intanon then secured three consecutive points to reach match point and converted her second opportunity to claim victory.
