Punjab Kings Face Challenges in IPL 2026

Punjab Kings, who dominated the early stages of the IPL 2026 season, are now fighting to hold onto their fourth-place position. Their recent defeat against the Delhi Capitals marked their fourth consecutive loss, raising questions about their strategies, especially the decision to exclude Yuzvendra Chahal from the bowling lineup. In a surprising move, Sairaj Bahutule, the spin bowling coach, represented the team at the press conference to explain the absence of a spinner in the match against DC.

After starting the season with seven victories, PBKS now finds its playoff aspirations hanging by a thread. Fans and analysts were left puzzled when Chahal, who was part of the playing XI, did not bowl at all during the match. Bahutule commented on the decision-making process, stating, 'There was definitely a consideration for using spinners during the time-out, but the conditions favored fast bowlers. The decision to stick with pace was made quickly, and while we took early wickets, one partnership shifted the momentum away from us.'

Bahutule also indicated that significant changes to the lineup are unlikely as the team has performed well overall. 'Despite the recent losses, we will reflect on specific areas but won't make major changes since the players have been performing. We will analyze how to turn things around,' he noted.

Echoing the sentiments of captain Shreyas Iyer, Bahutule pointed to fielding and bowling errors as contributing factors to their defeat. 'We need to address certain phases of our bowling and fielding. Unfortunately, we dropped crucial catches at key moments, which affected our momentum. If we had taken those catches, the outcome could have been different, and we might have won by a significant margin,' he added.
