The Punjab Kings (PBKS) kicked off their IPL 2026 season with an impressive victory against the Gujarat Titans (GT), winning by three wickets with five balls remaining. The match showcased a strong bowling display, complemented by an outstanding performance from Cooper Connolly, who played a pivotal role in securing the win. With this victory, PBKS has made a solid start and currently holds a favorable position in the points table.

Following this close win, PBKS sits fourth in the standings with 2 points and a Net Run Rate of +0.509. Meanwhile, GT, despite the loss, remains in fifth place, just outside the playoff zone, with a Net Run Rate of -0.509. Other teams, including KKR, SRH, and CSK, have dropped one position each, now occupying the 6th, 7th, and 8th spots respectively.

Connolly's Stellar Performance Leads PBKS to Victory

After winning the toss, Punjab Kings chose to bowl first, successfully limiting the Gujarat Titans to a modest total of 162 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. The PBKS bowlers maintained tight control over the GT batsmen, with Shubman Gill being the only standout performer, scoring 39 runs. Jos Buttler struggled to find form, contributing only 38 runs off 31 balls.

Vijaykumar Vyshak was the standout bowler for PBKS, claiming three wickets, while Yuzvendra Chahal added two more to his tally. Despite losing an early wicket, PBKS found stability through a solid 76-run partnership between Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, and Connolly. Shreyas Iyer also contributed with a quick 18 runs, helping to maintain the momentum.

However, GT made a late comeback by taking five quick wickets towards the end of the innings, with Prasidh Krishna capturing three of those. Despite the pressure, the 22-year-old Connolly remained composed, finishing with a well-crafted 72 runs to guide his team to victory.
