Prayagraj Residents Unite in Prayer for India's T20 World Cup Semifinal Victory
Local Support for Team India Ahead of Semifinals
In Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, locals gathered to offer prayers for the Indian cricket team's success in the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinals against England, scheduled at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.
Devotees expressed their support through chants and prayers directed towards various deities, particularly Lord Shiva, showcasing their patriotic spirit. They recited mantras like “Om Namah Shivay,” hoping for a victory for the Men in Blue.
Ankit Kumar, a local supporter, shared his optimism about Team India, reminiscing about past triumphs over England, including Yuvraj Singh's iconic six sixes. He confidently predicted that India would not only win the semifinal but also triumph over New Zealand in the final.
“We have prayed for Team India’s success. We have previously defeated England. Yuvraj Singh hit six sixes in six balls. We will win the semifinals and then beat New Zealand in the finals,” he stated.
Despite a challenging start with a 76-run defeat against South Africa in their opening Super 8s match, India has performed well overall, securing six victories out of seven T20 World Cup matches.
However, the team has yet to deliver a flawless performance, with batting, bowling, and fielding needing to align perfectly.
Under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, India faced a critical situation after their loss to South Africa. They needed a win against the West Indies, and thanks to Sanju Samson's impressive 97*, they achieved a comfortable five-wicket victory, securing their place in the semifinals.
On the other hand, England, captained by Harry Brook, has also had a strong tournament, winning six out of seven matches and currently riding a five-match winning streak. Their only defeat came against the West Indies during the group stage.
Historically, India leads the head-to-head record against England in T20 World Cup matches with a 3-2 advantage. Their first encounter in the inaugural edition saw India win by 18 runs, highlighted by Yuvraj Singh's six sixes in an over. In the 2009 edition, England narrowly defeated India by three runs. However, in 2012, India secured a significant 90-run victory, with Rohit Sharma's half-century and Harbhajan Singh's four wickets.
In a memorable semifinal in Adelaide, England chased down 169 runs without losing a wicket, led by Jos Buttler and Alex Hales. Two years later, Rohit Sharma's fifty helped India avenge their previous defeat, as they defended a total of 171 runs, with Axar Patel's exceptional bowling leading to England's collapse for just 103 runs.
