Historic Win for Pranavi Urs at Asian Games

In a remarkable achievement, Pranavi Urs has been awarded Rs 1 crore by the IGPL for clinching the gold medal in women's individual golf at the Asian Games held in Aichi-Nagoya on Saturday. This victory marks her as the first Indian woman to secure an Asian Games gold in golf.

Additionally, the IGPL will grant Rs 25 lakh to the Indian women's team, which includes Pranavi, Aditi Ashok, and Diksha Dagar, for their silver medal performance in the team event. This award celebrates their historic accomplishment of bringing home India's first medal in this category.

Anurag Singh Thakur, a prominent Member of Parliament from Himachal Pradesh and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Coal, Mines and Steel, made the announcement during a ceremony at Qutab Golf Course in New Delhi.

Thakur expressed pride in Pranavi's victory, stating, "India waited 24 years for a golf gold at the Asian Games, and Pranavi delivered it today. Her resilience, especially after losing her lead on a hole, showcases her determination. Along with Aditi and Diksha, they achieved a significant milestone for Indian women's golf. It's heartening to see AM Green IGPL rewarding their efforts, inspiring young golfers to strive for excellence for India."

At just 23 years old, Pranavi, hailing from Mysuru, finished the tournament with an impressive score of 15-under 265 at the Kasugai Country Club East Course. She faced tough competition from Singapore's Shannon Xuan Yin Tan and China's Yin Ruoning, who both finished just one stroke behind her at 14-under 266. Despite a challenging start with a triple bogey on the third hole, Pranavi maintained her composure, finishing the final round with an even-par 70. This victory is particularly significant as it ends a 21-year wait for a gold medal in golf at the Asian Games, the last being won by Shiv Kapur in 2002.

Reflecting on the importance of nurturing future golfing talent, Thakur noted, "To cultivate more golfers like Pranavi, we must bridge the gap that arises after school. Many players shift their focus to careers when they transition to colleges or universities. While IGPL provides a platform, we need more initiatives like it and greater investment in developing this ecosystem."

Pranavi also contributed to the team event alongside Olympians Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar, finishing with a combined score of 14-under, just behind the Chinese team. Aditi delivered an outstanding performance with a three-under 67, featuring six consecutive birdies on the back nine, which secured the silver for India.

Leander Paes, an Olympic bronze medallist and 18-time Grand Slam champion, praised Pranavi's composure during the final round, stating, "Experiencing the podium for India is unparalleled. Pranavi's ability to recover from a triple bogey early in the final round demonstrates her patience and dedication, qualities that are honed over years of hard work."

Pranavi's sister, Vidharti Urs, who attended the IGPL pro-am day, remarked, "From the beginning, she's been an aggressive player, always aiming to hit the ball hard. That's her style."

The AM Green IGPL is committed to elevating Indian golfers' profiles, with the second season of the tournament set to take place in Hyderabad from October 7 to October 9, following the Delhi leg.
