Portugal's Coach Calls for Improvement After World Cup Draw with DR Congo
Portugal's World Cup Opener Ends in Draw
In Texas, USA, on June 18, Portugal's head coach Roberto Martinez expressed the need for his team to enhance their performance following a 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026. He emphasized the importance of quickly evaluating their performance to progress in the tournament.
Martinez stated, "We must improve and be very self-critical," highlighting the necessity for the team to reflect on their display and take responsibility. He noted that the World Cup demands such accountability, urging the players to focus on recovery and preparation.
He remarked on the significance of Portugal's goal, which should have generated momentum, but instead, the team failed to capitalize on it. "We scored at a moment when emotions typically help to maintain momentum, but it had the opposite effect for us," he explained.
The coach pointed out that Portugal struggled to convert their possession into effective attacking plays, which allowed DR Congo to regroup and launch counter-attacks. "We aimed to maintain ball possession but couldn't penetrate the box, giving Congo the chance to reorganize and counter," he added.
Despite the setback, Martinez stressed the importance of learning and evolving, insisting that Portugal must uphold their footballing identity and strive for excellence in the tournament. He also acknowledged DR Congo's impressive intensity and mentality during the match.
"They played with confidence and intensity, treating it like a final in a major tournament, which reflects their strong character. We anticipated this from Congo, so it wasn't unexpected," he concluded.
Portugal faced a challenging start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup journey, drawing 1-1 with a determined DR Congo team. As one of the favorites, Portugal initially took the lead with Joao Neves scoring a header within the first six minutes, seemingly on track for a straightforward win.
However, DR Congo found their rhythm and equalized just before halftime, with Yoane Wissa scoring a header from a corner, marking the nation's first-ever World Cup goal.
Cristiano Ronaldo, participating in his sixth World Cup, had a subdued performance and struggled to make a significant impact as the match concluded in a draw. In a post on X, Ronaldo remarked, "It wasn't the start we wanted, but this is far from over. Keep your heads up and focus on the next game," showcasing a resilient attitude despite the disappointing result.
