PM Modi Critiques TMC Over Messi's Kolkata Visit Mismanagement
Modi's Criticism of TMC's Handling of Messi's Visit
In North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his discontent on Sunday regarding the Trinamool Congress's management of Argentine football legend Lionel Messi's visit to Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium last year.
He blamed the disarray of the event on what he termed the TMC's "Maha Jungle Raj," asserting that the ruling party has adversely affected the sports culture in the state.
"The TMC syndicate has severely harmed the sports ecosystem here. Just a few months ago in Kolkata, the images that circulated among football fans globally were a direct consequence of the Maha Jungle Raj. I promise the athletes of Bengal that a new sports ecosystem will be established under the 'Khelo India' initiative," Modi stated, pledging that the BJP would revitalize Bengal's sports culture.
Chaos During Messi's Kolkata Appearance
The uproar began after Messi's appearance in Kolkata, which marked the initial stop of the GOAT India Tour 2025, turned chaotic. Fans reported that VIPs and politicians crowded the field, obstructing the view for many spectators hoping to see the football star.
Frustrated fans resorted to vandalizing parts of the stadium, blaming the organizers for inadequate planning and management. Following the turmoil during Messi's GOAT India Tour in Kolkata, West Bengal Sports Minister Aroop Biswas resigned, a decision accepted by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Messi subsequently continued his India tour, making stops in Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi, before concluding his journey at the Vantara animal sanctuary in Jamnagar.
