Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], September 18: Roger Cook, the Premier of Western Australia, has hailed the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) match between the Perth Scorchers and the Melbourne Renegades in Chennai as a "fantastic event for Indian cricket enthusiasts." He expressed hopes that the Indian Premier League (IPL) could eventually be hosted in Western Australia.

The Scorchers are set to compete against the Renegades at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on December 12, marking the first time a BBL match will take place outside of Australia.

"This is a historic moment as the Big Bash League makes its debut in India. Our team, the Perth Scorchers, will face the Melbourne Renegades. This event not only showcases Australian cricket but also strengthens the ties between Western Australia, Australia, and India. It promises to be an exciting spectacle for Indian cricket fans, and we expect a significant number of Australian cricket supporters to attend," Cook stated.

"I’m relieved I’m not playing (he joked). I hope there’s air conditioning available for watching. December can be quite challenging, so it will be interesting to see how the match unfolds. One day, we should bring the IPL to WA, perhaps at the WACA or our Big Perth Stadium, to celebrate Indian cricket," he added.

Cook made these remarks while in Mumbai for a Western Australian showcase, where he announced a new collaboration between the Perth Scorchers and the Cook Labor Government’s global State of Energy initiative.

This campaign aims to highlight Western Australia’s strengths, industries, and opportunities to a global audience. During the event, Cook was also presented with a signature Scorchers jersey, showcasing the state’s investment, tourism, and creative sectors to international stakeholders.

The upcoming Scorchers-Renegades match in Chennai is anticipated to broaden the BBL's reach in India, a significant cricket market. This match will introduce the Australian T20 league to a venue familiar to Indian cricket fans through the IPL and international matches.

Adam Voges, head coach of the Scorchers, mentioned that the team will prepare for the conditions at Chepauk, leveraging the experience of players who have previously played in India.

"We pride ourselves on having a balanced squad capable of adapting to various conditions—whether it’s the fast, bouncy pitches of Optus Stadium or the unique conditions at Chepauk, which we are excited to play at. We will have a mix of fast bowlers who excel at home and our talented slow bowlers, which will be crucial for this match," Voges explained.

"Additionally, our batters must adjust to the Chennai conditions to succeed. We plan to arrive a few days early to acclimatize and gather insights from players with IPL or Australian team experience to quickly adapt to the conditions," he added.

The Scorchers will arrive in Chennai a few days prior to the match to acclimatize and evaluate the conditions. Voges emphasized the importance of team balance, as both pace and spin will play significant roles, and batters will need to adapt to the pitch.

Entering the new season, Perth is the most successful franchise in BBL history, boasting six titles. Their match against the Renegades will be a landmark event for the league, marking its first fixture outside Australian borders.

This announcement was made during a trade mission to India and Vietnam, aimed at establishing Western Australia as a long-term partner in energy transition, enhancing direct aviation and tourism connections, promoting the state’s primary industries, and expanding skills and training pathways.

The mission also aims to bolster local employment and strengthen economic ties with international partners. The Chennai fixture of the Scorchers is part of a broader initiative to present Western Australia to Indian audiences while fostering sporting and cultural connections between the two nations.

The BBL Season 16 kicks off on December 12, with the Scorchers-Renegades match at Chepauk set to launch the campaign.
