Nissanka's Insights on IPL Opportunities

New Delhi, April 9: Pathum Nissanka, a batter for the Delhi Capitals (DC), expressed that the Indian Premier League (IPL) represents a significant opportunity for players from Sri Lanka, urging those selected to capitalize on it through outstanding performances.

Despite facing challenges with some teammates sidelined due to injuries, Nissanka, who is originally from Sri Lanka, underscored the necessity of rising to the occasion, quickly adapting, and maximizing the opportunity with the Capitals.

“Every Sri Lankan dreams of playing in the IPL, and when given a chance, it’s crucial to perform well. A few players are out due to injuries, but we have the opportunity, and we must make it count,” Nissanka shared with reporters.

In a recent match against the Gujarat Titans (GT) in New Delhi, Nissanka contributed significantly, scoring 41 runs off 24 balls, which included six fours and a six.

DC chose to bowl first, and the GT lineup, led by skipper Shubman Gill, who scored 70 runs off 45 balls, along with Washington Sundar’s 55 off 32 balls and Jos Buttler’s 52 off 27 balls, set a formidable target of 210/4.

While chasing the daunting target of 211, Nissanka formed a solid opening partnership with KL Rahul, accumulating 76 runs in just 8 overs. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, DC fell short, losing to GT by a narrow margin of one run.

Nissanka reflected on his partnership with Rahul, noting that they aimed to be aggressive during the power play as part of their strategy. He acknowledged Rahul’s experience and guidance, which helped him adjust to various playing conditions, while also emphasizing his own determination to perform at his best each time he bats.

“Rahul and I aimed to take control during the power play, which is part of our strategy. We played well today. He shares valuable insights and tips on how to navigate these venues. I strive to give my best every time because I have faith in myself,” he added.

After this match, DC is currently positioned fourth in the standings with two victories and one defeat, while GT sits in sixth place with one win and two losses.
