Fatima Sana Penalized for Breaching ICC Code of Conduct

Dubai [UAE], September 7: Fatima Sana, the captain of the Pakistan women's cricket team, has been penalized 10% of her match fee due to a violation of Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during a Group A match against India in the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 held in Dubai on Saturday, as reported by a media release from the ICC.

The breach was identified under Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which addresses the use of language, gestures, or actions that may belittle or provoke an aggressive response from a batter following their dismissal in an international match.

Additionally, Fatima has received one demerit point added to her disciplinary record, marking her second offense within a 24-month timeframe, which now totals two demerit points. Her first demerit point was issued during the opening match of a T20I series against Ireland in Dublin on August 6, 2025.

The incident in question took place during the second over of India's innings when Fatima gestured towards the pavilion after dismissing opener Shafali Verma.

Fatima acknowledged her offense and accepted the proposed sanction from Supriya Rani Das, a member of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.

The on-field umpires, Nimali Perera and Shathira Jakir Jesy, along with third umpire Rokeya Sultana and fourth umpire Rabab Ahsan, were responsible for levying the charge.

Level 1 violations can result in penalties ranging from an official reprimand to a maximum of 50% of a player's match fee, along with one or two demerit points.

It is important to note that accumulating four or more demerit points within a 24-month period leads to the conversion of these points into suspension points, resulting in a ban. Specifically, two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test match or two ODIs or two T20Is, whichever occurs first for the player. Demerit points remain on a player’s disciplinary record for 24 months before being expunged.
