Pakistan Cricket Board Considers Major Changes After Test Series Defeat
Potential Shake-Up in Pakistan Cricket Leadership
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), under the leadership of Mohsin Naqvi, is contemplating the dismissal of Test head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and captain Shan Masood following a disappointing 0-2 series defeat to Bangladesh last month. This loss marks a troubling trend, as Bangladesh has triumphed over Pakistan in all four Test matches across their last two series. In 2024, Bangladesh secured a 2-0 victory in Rawalpindi and replicated this success on home soil.
Reports indicate that the PCB has initiated discussions with former cricket stars Muhammad Hafeez and Younis Khan regarding potential key roles within the national team. A source revealed, "I can confirm that Younis Khan and Muhammad Hafeez have both had talks with PCB officials about joining the board in key positions. But things have yet to be finalised." The source also mentioned that following the recent defeat, advisors to Naqvi have suggested a restructuring of the Test team.
There is a proposal to relieve Sarfaraz of his head coach duties, potentially returning him to oversee the national under-19 and A teams. However, Sarfaraz's exit hinges on the PCB reaching an agreement with Younis, who has outlined specific conditions for accepting any role. Meanwhile, Masood has requested additional time to lead the team in the upcoming away series against the West Indies and England, but the PCB is reportedly considering a change in captaincy.
Pakistan is set to play its inaugural Test match against the West Indies at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy on July 25. Although discussions with PCB officials are still in the preliminary stages, Hafeez is being eyed for the roles of chief selector and head of international cricket. The source noted, "In Hafeez’s case, there is a feeling that since the former player has been pretty critical about the team and board in media, roping him in might create an impression he has been offered a position to stop his criticism."
