Nishad Kumar's Remarkable Achievements

Nishad Kumar, a para-athlete hailing from Una, has made a name for himself by consistently winning medals at prestigious international competitions. His recent performances at the ongoing Para Asian Games in Japan have particularly caught the attention of his childhood coach, Naseem Ahmad. Nishad has secured gold medals in both the long jump and high jump events.

With two silver medals from the 2020 and 2024 Paralympics and a gold from the 2022 Asian Games already under his belt, this latest achievement further solidifies his status as one of India's top para-athletes.

Ahmad expressed his admiration, stating, "Winning gold in two events at this level is remarkable. Few athletes can accomplish such a feat. He is performing at his peak and has made us all proud." Ahmad coached Nishad during his formative years at the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in Panchkula.

Ahmad was particularly amazed by Nishad's gold in the long jump, saying, "I was shocked when I heard he won gold in the long jump. I couldn't believe it."

He elaborated on his astonishment, noting that Nishad had primarily focused on high jumping throughout his career and had only occasionally participated in long jump events at the national level before his recent success at the Para Asian Games. "That’s just incredible," Ahmad remarked, who has also trained India's renowned javelin thrower, Neeraj Chopra.

Nishad, who grew up in a modest family in Una, faced a significant challenge when he lost his hand in a machinery accident at the age of seven. Nevertheless, he remained dedicated to athletics during his school years, with his parents supporting his passion for sports despite their financial constraints.

"After he graduated from school, his parents brought him to me at the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in 2016. They had learned about para-sports and wanted to give their son a chance in this field," Ahmad recounted.

What initially impressed Ahmad was Nishad's height. Now towering at six feet four inches, he quickly gained the coach's respect through his dedication and determination. "He proved to be a very diligent and focused young man. Within three years, he began achieving remarkable results and has continued to progress," Ahmad noted.

Despite his accomplishments, Nishad remains committed to his sport. Ahmad believes that with several competitive years ahead, he can maintain his excellence at the highest levels. "He is a sports icon not just for Himachal Pradesh but for the entire nation," he concluded.
