Auckland, Oct 30: In a stunning display of batting, Glenn Phillips and Michael Bracewell propelled New Zealand to a remarkable total of 259/7 during the fourth T20I at Eden Park on Friday.
Phillips, who scored 107 runs off just 49 balls, achieved his third T20I century, while Bracewell contributed significantly with 65 runs from 25 balls. This impressive score marks New Zealand's highest T20I total and the largest ever recorded against India in this format.
This new record surpasses New Zealand's previous best of 254/5, set four years ago against Scotland, and also exceeds the previous record of 257/3 held by England earlier this year in Southampton.
The Indian bowlers faced a challenging outing, receiving a taste of their own medicine as the Kiwis dominated the match. Nitish Kumar Reddy endured a particularly tough over, conceding 32 runs, while Axar Patel, Mayank Yadav, and Prince Yadav also faced significant punishment. Notably, Arshdeep Singh reached a milestone by taking his 150th T20I wicket, becoming the first Indian to achieve this feat.
For India, Mayank Yadav stood out with the ball, taking 3 wickets for 48 runs in his four overs. Arshdeep, Prince Yadav, and Nitish Kumar Reddy each claimed one wicket.
The partnership between Phillips and Bracewell was a highlight, as they combined for a stunning 115-run stand for the fifth wicket off just 40 balls. Finn Allen also made a valuable contribution with 31 runs from 17 balls, while Daryl Mitchell added 24 runs from nine deliveries.
India chose to bowl first after Shreyas Iyer won the toss for the fourth consecutive time in the series. The team saw two changes, with Mayank Yadav and Ishan Kishan replacing Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
India started strong, with Mayank dismissing Tim Seifert in the first over. However, Daryl Mitchell quickly turned the tide, hitting Mayank for two sixes and two fours before being dismissed LBW.
Phillips and Allen steadied the innings, ending the powerplay at 67/2. Allen's aggressive batting included two sixes against Axar Patel before he was caught out.
Despite a few economical overs from the Indian bowlers, Phillips and Bracewell shifted the momentum, scoring heavily in the middle overs. They welcomed off-spinner Naman Dhir with 16 runs in his first over and continued to dominate.
Bracewell reached his fifty off just 19 balls, marking one of the fastest half-centuries against India. Phillips, in exceptional form, brought up his century off 46 balls before being dismissed in the final over.
New Zealand finished their innings with a record total, leaving India with a challenging target. Brief Scores: New Zealand 259/7 in 20 overs (Glenn Phillips 107, Michael Bracewell 65; Mayank Yadav 3-48, Arshdeep Singh 1-38) against India.
