New Zealand's Ambition for Series Win

Nottingham [UK], June 24: Tom Latham, the captain of New Zealand, has urged his team to keep improving and to "raise the bar" as they prepare for the decisive third Test against England at Trent Bridge, commencing Thursday.

The New Zealand squad enters this crucial match with confidence following a dominant 253-run victory at The Oval, which came shortly after the unexpected retirement of their former captain, Kane Williamson, from international cricket. The series is currently tied at one match each.

Latham commended his team's response to Williamson's exit, noting that their recent win showcased New Zealand's dedication to their core strengths.

"In any series, the ultimate goal is to achieve the desired results by the end," Latham stated, as reported by a sports media outlet.

He emphasized the importance of their preparation and sticking to their successful strategies. "What matters is the effort we put in leading up to that point, and maintaining our style as much as possible," he added.

The captain highlighted that New Zealand's performance in the second Test was a refreshing contrast to the increasingly aggressive style dominating modern cricket.

"Last week was a prime example of our approach, which may differ from the current trends in Test cricket. We aimed for a more traditional style, focusing on sustained pressure and being a consistent threat," he explained.

"If we need to adopt a similar strategy this week, we will certainly consider it. We have progressively improved throughout the series, and we hope to continue that trend," he remarked.

New Zealand will miss their pace leader Kyle Jamieson in the final Test due to a planned workload management strategy following his recovery from a back stress fracture.

"He’s not injured; there’s nothing to be concerned about," Latham clarified. "It was always intended for him to participate in two Test matches."

Blair Tickner is the frontrunner to take Jamieson's place, while all-rounder Mitchell Santner is also being considered as New Zealand contemplates fielding a frontline spinner for the first time in this series.

Santner has recently returned from a shoulder injury and could thrive in the dry conditions brought on by the current British heatwave.

"Mitch’s preparation for this tour is a testament to his hard work," Latham noted. "He has the ability to spin the ball on various surfaces. If we choose to go that route, we know he’ll be a significant threat throughout the five days," he added.

Latham is also mindful of the challenges that Trent Bridge presents, known for its fast outfield and scoring opportunities. He experienced this firsthand in 2022 when England successfully chased down 299 runs in just 50 overs under the captaincy of Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow.

Reflecting on that series, Latham remarked that New Zealand had been more competitive than the final scores indicated.

"If you analyze that series overall, the results were likely closer than the scoreboard reflects," he stated. "In all three matches, we were certainly in contention... England had three impressive chases during that series, and we all remember what transpired towards the end with Jonny [Bairstow] and Stokesy [Ben Stokes]," he added.

The New Zealand captain anticipates another high-scoring match but believes his team is better prepared to adapt this time.

With the series at stake, New Zealand aims to build on their momentum from The Oval and secure a significant away victory against England.
