New Developments at Mullanpur's Cricket Stadium Following PCA Leadership Change
Changes at the Mullanpur Cricket Stadium
Following the election of Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer as the general secretary of the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), the Mullanpur international cricket stadium has unveiled a new board featuring the cricket association's name in Gurmukhi script.
Despite being officially named the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, insiders suggest that this designation has not been formally recorded in the PCA's documentation. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refers to the venue simply as the new PCA Stadium located in New Chandigarh.
According to the PCA's official website, in a compliance report submitted to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the facility was identified as ‘IS Bindra Cricket Stadium by PCA (Project Name) and International Cricket Stadium (Project Type)’.
During a general meeting in the 2020-21 period, a proposal was made to name the stadium after Maharaja Yadavindra Singh, which reportedly received approval from the relevant authorities. However, no official documentation or visible signage reflecting this name has been discovered either inside or outside the stadium. Puneet Bali, the former general secretary of PCA, commented, “I recall the proposal for naming the stadium after Maharaja Yadavindra Singh, but nothing beyond that.”
PCA sources indicated that while a name change for the stadium is possible, it will not occur this year. An official stated, “We cannot rename the stadium without any record of its approval as Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Stadium. If that were the case, why is there no mention of it anywhere in the venue? The renaming process will take place, but not at this moment, as it requires extensive procedures.”
The stadium made its debut by hosting a significant match during the 2024 IPL season. Previously, it accommodated two women's ODI matches and one T20I last year. Additionally, it is set to host its inaugural Test match in June.
