Neeraj Chopra's Journey Through Injury and Recovery

Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has opened up about the fitness challenges he has faced over the past year, describing the last ten months as a significant test of his resilience. The 28-year-old, who is a two-time Olympic medalist, recently secured a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, adding to his impressive collection of accolades.

Chopra's performance was notably affected by an adductor muscle injury, along with several other minor issues. Although his season began later than expected, he found his form at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, achieving a season-best throw of 85.83 meters.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, he shared, "There are throws that travel far, and then there are moments that carry the weight of an entire journey. The past 10 months has tested me in ways I never expected." He accompanied this message with a video clip showcasing his performance at the CWG.

He elaborated on his recovery process, stating, "Recovering from multiple injuries, rebuilding my body, finding my rhythm again, and learning to be patient when all I wanted was to compete. I was training every day without knowing if I would even have a season to compete this year."

Chopra, who clinched gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast with a throw of 86.47 meters, missed the 2022 Games due to injury. He had suffered a lower back injury just before the World Championships last September and had only participated in one event prior to the CWG.

During the Games, he was outperformed by Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, the current world leader, who achieved a throw of 89.75 meters despite challenging windy conditions. Chopra expressed his gratitude to his support team for their unwavering assistance during his comeback.

He stated, "To be back competing at this level feels good. None of this would have been possible on my own. I’m deeply grateful for the people who never stopped believing in me. My physio, Ishaan Marwaha, has been with me every step of the recovery, helping me get back to doing what I love. My coach, Jai Chaudhary, has been with me since the very first time I picked up a javelin. My family has always stood strong with me, no matter the circumstances. The season continues, one step at a time."
