Neeraj Chopra Concludes Coaching Relationship with Jan Zelezny

Neeraj Chopra, the celebrated javelin thrower and two-time Olympic medalist, announced on Saturday that he is parting ways with his Czech coach Jan Zelezny after just one season. Chopra described their time together as filled with "progress, respect, and a mutual passion for the sport."

While the reason for this decision was not disclosed, it is noteworthy that under Zelezny's guidance, Chopra achieved the remarkable feat of surpassing the 90-meter mark last year. Zelezny, a legendary figure in javelin throw and the world record holder, played a significant role in this achievement.

Chopra expressed that learning from someone he has admired since childhood was a dream realized, providing him with a new "toolbox of exercises, technical insights, and innovative perspectives."

He remarked, "Jan's approach to technique, rhythm, and movement is extraordinary, and I gained invaluable knowledge from each session we shared."

Chopra also highlighted the friendship he developed with Zelezny, stating, "I take pride in the bond we've formed. Jan is not just the greatest javelin thrower ever, but also one of the finest individuals I've encountered."

Zelezny, reflecting on their collaboration, shared his satisfaction with their achievements. "Working with an athlete of Neeraj's caliber was a remarkable experience. I'm pleased we crossed paths and that I could help him break the 90-meter barrier for the first time," he said.

He noted that despite a back injury affecting Chopra's performance shortly before the Tokyo Olympics, the athlete still managed to secure a commendable record, finishing second in most competitions.

Zelezny believes Chopra has immense potential for the future, stating, "Our relationship remains positive on a personal level, and we will keep in touch. We plan to meet at training camps or even during family vacations in Europe or India."

Looking forward, Chopra is eager to take charge of his coaching journey. "I am excited about what 2026 holds. I began my preparations in early November, aiming to maintain my health and looking forward to competing again soon," he shared.

He also mentioned his anticipation for the World Championships in 2027 and the ultimate goal of the 2028 Olympic Games.

Chopra had previously finished eighth in the world event after achieving a 90-meter throw at the Doha Diamond League last year.
