Neeraj Chopra's Comeback at Commonwealth Games

Glasgow [Scotland], July 30: Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra is set to kick off his quest to reclaim the Commonwealth Games title at the Scotstoun Stadium this Thursday.

Chopra, who clinched the gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, was unable to compete in Birmingham 2022 due to an injury. Now, he returns to the Games in Glasgow, determined to secure his second title.

Previously, the Olympic medallist participated in the Doha Diamond League, marking his first event of the 2026 season after recovering from a back injury.

In Doha, Chopra showcased his skills, achieving a throw of 85.69 metres on his third attempt, placing him third after the initial rounds.

He followed this with a throw of 83.45 metres in the fourth round, needing to exceed 86 metres in the fifth round to stay in contention for the finals.

However, a foul throw in the fifth round saw him drop to fourth place, ending his participation in the event.

The men's javelin throw at the Commonwealth Games 2026 will unfold in two phases, with the qualification round taking place on July 30, followed by the medal-deciding final on August 1 (IST).

On a positive note, India had a remarkable Day 7 at the Commonwealth Games 2026, securing three medals—one gold and two silver—along with at least six more medals anticipated in boxing.

Dilip Mahadu Gavit earned gold in the men’s T47 100m, setting a Games record with a time of 10.71 seconds, while Mohammed Basil Morssinganakth secured silver, marking a one-two finish for India. Additionally, Murali Sreeshankar won silver in the men’s long jump, making history as the first Indian male long jumper to achieve two Commonwealth Games medals.

Six Indian boxers, including Sakshi Choudhary, Jaismine Lamboria, Arundhati Choudhary, Sachin Siwach, Ankush Panghal, and Narender Berwal, advanced to the semifinals, ensuring at least six more medals for the country.

India also made strides in various athletics and lawn bowls events, while experiencing mixed results in swimming and para-athletics. By the end of Day 7, India had amassed a total of 15 medals, comprising three gold, nine silver, and three bronze.
