Sreeshankar's Impressive Performance

In Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on September 28, Indian long jumper Murali Sreeshankar achieved a remarkable feat by winning the silver medal in the men's long jump event at the Asian Games 2026. He recorded an impressive jump of 8.07 meters.

This victory marks Sreeshankar's second consecutive silver medal at the Asian Games, having previously finished as the runner-up at the Hangzhou 2023 edition, as reported by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

The gold medal was claimed by China's Shi Yuhao, who achieved a season-best jump of 8.17 meters, while Uzbekistan's Anvar Anvarov took home the bronze with a jump of 8.06 meters. Taiwan's Lin Yu-tang narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth with a jump of 8.05 meters.

The competition was fiercely contested, with only 12 centimeters separating the top four athletes. Sreeshankar managed to secure the silver by finishing just one centimeter ahead of Anvarov.

He qualified for the final with a jump of 7.84 meters, placing him second overall. During the final, Sreeshankar consistently maintained his position, crossing the eight-meter mark and holding onto second place as the event progressed.

This silver medal adds to Sreeshankar's accolades, marking his second medal at the Asian Games following his success in Hangzhou 2023.

Another Indian competitor, David Solomon Patturaj, finished in seventh place with a best jump of 7.70 meters.

Sreeshankar's achievement contributes to India's athletics medal tally at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, bringing the country's total to 43 medals, which includes four gold, 19 silver, and 20 bronze. India currently ranks 12th in the medal standings, with athletics alone accounting for 17 of these medals.

Earlier on the same day, Parul Chaudhary secured her second bronze medal in the women's 5000m with a time of 15:14.61. Vithya Ramraj also earned a bronze in the 400m hurdles, achieving a personal best of 54.75 seconds, breaking the national record she previously shared with PT Usha. Additionally, Gulveer Singh won his second silver in the men's 1500m with a personal best of 3:36.72.
