The upcoming IPL 2026 match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings is generating buzz, particularly with the potential return of MS Dhoni, who has been recovering from an injury. This match promises to be a thrilling encounter, reminiscent of past El Clásico showdowns.

IPL 2026 Showdown: MI vs CSK

The Mumbai Indians (MI) are gearing up to face the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 33rd match of IPL 2026, scheduled for April 23 (Thursday) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. This highly anticipated clash marks the first major meeting between these two teams this season, often referred to as the El Clásico of the IPL. MS Dhoni has yet to make an appearance for CSK in IPL 2026 due to a calf injury sustained during practice prior to the tournament's commencement. However, there are promising updates for fans regarding the legendary wicketkeeper-batter.

Recent reports indicate that MS Dhoni has regained full fitness and is likely to return to the field against MI. He has been spotted training with the team and executing his shots effectively. Nonetheless, during a press conference ahead of the match, bowling coach Eric Simons mentioned that the franchise is taking a cautious approach, stating that a final decision will be made only if the medical team is satisfied with Dhoni's condition. “(Regarding) MS, we will know tomorrow... that decision will be made once he in particular and the medical staff are completely happy that he is ready to go,” Simons explained.

Impact on Sanju Samson's Role

What Will Happen To Sanju Samson?

If MS Dhoni makes his return, it raises questions about Sanju Samson's position as the primary wicketkeeper against MI. Dhoni has been seen practicing his wicketkeeping skills, suggesting he will take on that role, while Sanju may shift to an outfield position. Former CSK player and Dhoni's long-time teammate, Ravichandran Ashwin, shared insights on his YouTube channel, indicating that Dhoni is likely to play against MI and that Sanju might serve as an impact player. “I've never seen Dhoni keeping in the nets before—never in my life. Today he was keeping, which means he is going to take the wicket-keeping gloves, and Sanju would have to take an outfield role or might come in as an impact player. And I'm 100% sure that he will play tomorrow (day after). I've heard that he is fit and good to go,” Ashwin stated.
