Mumbai Indians' New Opening Duo

In the absence of Ryan Rickelton and with Rohit Sharma sidelined due to injury, the Mumbai Indians (MI) have opted for a fresh opening partnership for their IPL 2026 match against the Gujarat Titans (GT). Quinton de Kock will take the crease alongside debutant Danish Malewar. De Kock enters this match on the back of a century against the Punjab Kings in his season opener, while Malewar is set to make his IPL debut today, marking a significant milestone in his career.

MI has made three changes to their lineup, with Mitchell Santner returning to fitness. Along with Rickelton, Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar have also been left out of the squad led by Hardik Pandya.

Introducing Danish Malewar

Danish Malewar is recognized as one of the most promising young talents in Indian domestic cricket, having showcased his skills with Vidarbha over the years. The 22-year-old was acquired by MI during the 2026 IPL auction for his base price of ₹30 lakhs. Today marks his first-ever T20 match at the professional level, as he has yet to play in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) or make his List A debut. His previous season was marred by injury, which sidelined him for nearly four months during both the SMAT and Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT).

Malewar boasts an impressive first-class record, accumulating 1,285 runs in 26 innings at an average of 49.33, including three centuries and ten half-centuries. He played a pivotal role in Vidarbha's Ranji Trophy victory in the 2024-25 season, scoring 783 runs in nine matches at an average of 51.83, featuring two centuries and six half-centuries during that successful campaign under captain Akshay Wadkar.

Unfortunately, Malewar's IPL debut did not go as planned, as he was dismissed for just two runs after facing four deliveries, falling victim to Kagiso Rabada's bowling.
