Mumbai Indians Struggle in IPL 2023

The Mumbai Indians are currently facing a challenging situation in their IPL campaign, having lost five out of their last seven matches. Expectations were high for their home game against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), but they suffered a significant defeat by 103 runs. This series of losses has raised questions about Hardik Pandya's captaincy, with many scrutinizing his tactical choices. Previously, Hardik enjoyed success with the Gujarat Titans, leading them to a championship in 2022 and a finals appearance in 2023, but his transition to MI has not yielded similar results. Despite reaching the playoffs in 2023 and 2025, the team finished last in 2024.

In the aftermath of the loss to CSK, former Pakistan cricketer Kamran Akmal suggested that MI should consider replacing Hardik as captain. He praised Hardik as one of the top all-rounders but argued that stepping down from the captaincy could alleviate pressure and enhance his performance. Akmal proposed Suryakumar Yadav as a potential successor, stating, “I don’t understand when Mumbai will axe Hardik as the captain. They are at the bottom of the table. I feel Hardik should just play as a player.” He emphasized the need for MI to improve their overall performance.

Challenges Faced by MI

This season, MI has struggled to function cohesively as a team. There have been instances where the batting lineup performed well, only for the bowlers to falter, and vice versa. Against CSK, MI was tasked with chasing a target of 208 runs, a target they could have realistically achieved given their capabilities and the venue's history. However, they faltered, managing only 104 runs. Hardik acknowledged the need for a strong start in the chase but lamented the early loss of wickets that led to their downfall. He expressed hope for better performances in upcoming matches, stating, “I think that in the powerplay, losing that early wicket is always going to be tricky. You are always chasing the game, and we could not cope after that.” He also mentioned the need for discussions on potential personnel changes for future games.

Path to Playoffs for MI

For MI to have a chance at playoff qualification, they must secure victories in their remaining matches. Any further losses will likely extinguish their hopes, especially with the top two positions already appearing to be out of reach.
