Mumbai Indians Face Captaincy Dilemma Ahead of Key IPL Match
Captaincy Concerns for Mumbai Indians
Suryakumar Yadav, the acting captain of the Mumbai Indians, is likely to miss the pivotal IPL 2026 clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 10. Reports indicate that he was not seen with the team when they departed Mumbai for Raipur on May 6. The situation is further complicated by the absence of regular captain Hardik Pandya, who also did not travel with the squad. Pandya missed the recent match against Lucknow Super Giants due to a back spasm, and there is currently no update on whether he will join the team before the game.
According to sources, the Mumbai Indians' players and support staff have been traveling to Raipur in separate groups, raising concerns about how this might impact their training ahead of such an important match, especially given the limited flight options between the two cities.
Ryan Rickelton commented on Hardik's situation, expressing uncertainty about the injury's severity but remaining optimistic about his return. "I only learned about his back spasms this afternoon. I’m not sure when he’ll be back, but I hope he joins us in Raipur this week," Rickelton stated.
Potential Leadership Changes
As reported by a media outlet, if both Suryakumar and Pandya are unavailable, Rohit Sharma might step in as captain. However, Rohit is currently dealing with a hamstring issue, which adds another layer of complexity. The management is expected to assess his fitness on Sunday morning before making any decisions.
Rohit's recent performance against LSG showcased his return to form, as he scored an impressive 84 runs off 44 balls, despite entering the match as an Impact Player and opting not to field. His innings, which included six fours and seven sixes, was crucial in forming a record 143-run opening partnership with Rickelton, helping to keep Mumbai's playoff hopes alive. Former spinner Harbhajan Singh praised Rohit's performance as 'full paisa vasool' (worth every penny) for the fans.
If the experienced trio is unable to play, the team may need to look towards Jasprit Bumrah or the promising Tilak Varma for leadership. With only three wins from their first ten matches, the Mumbai Indians find themselves in a precarious position, needing to win all four remaining games and rely on favorable outcomes elsewhere to have any chance of reaching the playoffs.
