MS Dhoni's IPL Journey in Jeopardy as CSK Misses Playoffs
Dhoni's IPL Streak Ends
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faced a disappointing end to their campaign in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), falling short of playoff qualification by 89 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This marks the first time that MS Dhoni has not participated in any matches during a season, primarily due to a calf injury that raises questions about his future in the sport. In a post-match interview, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad addressed inquiries regarding Dhoni's potential return for the 2027 season, expressing uncertainty and stating that clarity would only come next year. He acknowledged the significant impact of Dhoni's absence, noting, "It's a hard miss for us. He can change the game in the late overs just by being at the crease. We will have to wait and see about next season, but I am really pleased with the players we have."
Ruturaj Gaikwad Discusses CSK's Season Challenges
Reflecting on the season, Ruturaj pointed out that injuries disrupted the team's momentum after they had begun to find their rhythm. He explained that CSK is currently in a transitional phase, integrating several young and less experienced players. "It was a tough season, especially after starting with three consecutive losses. We managed to find our footing and the right combinations, but injuries hit us hard. Losing Ghosh and Overton unsettled our balance, leaving us short in the last three matches. Many may not realize that we are a young team in transition, with over 8-10 players having played fewer than 20 games. They have gained valuable experience, and we have identified areas for improvement. Despite the challenges, we achieved six away victories, and I am proud of our team," Ruturaj remarked. He added that the team struggled to chase down 80 runs in 10 overs in Hyderabad and faced difficulties in Chennai. Moving on from experienced players like Rahane and Rayudu has been challenging, but he sees potential in newcomers like Karthik and Urvil, who are stepping up this season.
