MS Dhoni's Future in IPL 2026: Will He Continue Playing?
MS Dhoni's Retirement Speculations Persist
Discussions surrounding MS Dhoni's retirement have been prevalent for several years, yet he continues to defy expectations by playing for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). As the IPL 2026 season approaches, opinions vary regarding Dhoni's role within the team. Some analysts suggest he should serve as an impact player, while others believe he should take on a more prominent batting position.
Yograj Singh, known for his past criticisms of Dhoni, particularly regarding his son Yuvraj Singh's career, has surprisingly praised Dhoni. He criticized those advocating for Dhoni's retirement, asserting that he should continue playing for another decade. Yograj emphasized Dhoni's fitness and discipline, stating, “He (Dhoni) is still playing and should keep on doing so for the next 10 years. Because he has proved his fitness with the right discipline and dedication. I still see his forearm, amazing man. Who the hell are people to tell him to retire? No. As far as cricket is concerned, hats off to him,” during an interview with Inside Sports.
At 44 years old, Dhoni is adapting his role to that of a mentor, often coming in as a power hitter during the final overs. This season, CSK has brought in Sanju Samson, who may take over as the primary wicketkeeper, potentially limiting Dhoni's involvement.
R Ashwin Confirms Dhoni's Regular Role in IPL 2026
In the meantime, R Ashwin has expressed confidence that Dhoni will be a regular player in the CSK lineup. He noted that Dhoni has been training diligently for the past three months, indicating his desire to continue playing. “If you are making a CSK XI and Dhoni is in the squad, the debate ends there. He has to be in the XI. If he didn’t want to play, he would have retired. He has 100 percent belief that he can play. He has been practising for the last three months and is sending the message that he wants to play. If he wants to play, you cannot say no to him,” Ashwin stated in a YouTube interview.
