Morocco's Ambitious Outlook Ahead of World Cup 2026

New Jersey [US], June 13: As Morocco gears up for their opening match against Brazil, a five-time World Cup champion, coach Mohamed Ouahbi emphasized that his team has entered a "new dimension" and is determined to pursue the trophy in every major tournament.

In the previous World Cup held in Qatar, Morocco made history by becoming the first African nation to reach the semifinals, defeating formidable teams like Spain and Portugal along the way. Now, as co-hosts for the 2030 tournament alongside those very teams, Ouahbi believes that Morocco is now held in higher regard and feels no fear facing Brazil.

Ouahbi stated, "We are not afraid – Brazil is not intimidating us either. We have gained respect and must embrace this challenge. Our goal is to compete for the trophy whenever we enter a tournament," he remarked to reporters.

Having taken charge of the team just three months ago, Ouahbi faces challenges with injuries sidelining key players Nayef Aguerd and Abde Ezzalzouli. However, he confirmed that the rest of the squad is fit and ready for the crucial Group C match.

With prior experience coaching Morocco at the youth level, Ouahbi mentioned that the team's core principles will remain intact. "We are confident in our identity and values. While some may argue that Brazil is not the team it once was, this match is prestigious and marks an honorable start to our journey," he concluded.

Morocco's captain, Achraf Hakimi of Paris Saint-Germain, has recovered from a thigh injury sustained in April and enters the tournament with a psychological edge, having triumphed over Brazil in their last friendly encounter in 2023.
