Morkel Emphasizes Experience Over Youth

In Manchester, India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has expressed his support for the team management's choice to postpone Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's international debut. He highlighted the significance of relying on seasoned and in-form players within the current squad.

Morkel pointed out that Abhishek Sharma is currently India's top T20 batter, while Sanju Samson has made a remarkable impact as the Player of the World Cup.

He stated, "We must acknowledge that we have the number one batter in T20 cricket, Abhishek Sharma, and Sanju was the standout player during the World Cup," during a press briefing before the second T20I.

While recognizing the enthusiasm surrounding Sooryavanshi, Morkel emphasized the need to instill confidence and security in the existing players.

"As a coaching staff, it’s essential to show trust and support for your players. There’s a young talent eager to make his mark, which is exciting. However, it’s crucial to demonstrate that we believe in our current squad," he remarked.

He also mentioned that fostering healthy competition within the team is beneficial, but the focus should remain on supporting established players while gradually introducing new talent.

The Indian team is currently engaged in a five-match T20I series against England. In the first T20I, India scored a solid 189/7, with Abhishek Sharma contributing a quick 59 runs off 24 balls, Shreyas Iyer adding a steady 68, and Shivam Dube finishing with an unbeaten 42. Despite an early collapse in the top order, Sharma's aggressive innings revitalized the team, but rain interrupted play, resulting in a no-result.
