Mohit Sharma Reflects on MS Dhoni's Impact on His Career
Mohit Sharma's Journey with MS Dhoni
In a recent discussion, former Indian fast bowler Mohit Sharma shared insights about his time playing under the iconic captain MS Dhoni. He emphasized how Dhoni's remarkable situational awareness and understanding of players' strengths and weaknesses greatly influenced his career.
Mohit had the privilege of playing alongside Dhoni for both the Indian national team and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He expressed gratitude for having Dhoni as his captain during a significant portion of his cricketing journey.
"Playing under Mahi bhai was an incredible experience. I was fortunate that he captained me for most of my international matches. When you have a long association with a captain, they become attuned to your abilities and utilize you effectively," Mohit stated.
"I feel lucky to have played so much cricket under him. Even in franchise cricket, I was part of a team led by Mahi bhai. His influence on my career has been immense, and I hold deep appreciation for that," he added.
Dhoni stands out as one of cricket's most successful leaders, having captained India in a remarkable 332 international matches, achieving 178 victories. He is the only Indian captain to have secured all three major ICC limited-overs titles: the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy.
In the IPL, Dhoni has built a legendary status as the backbone of CSK, leading the team in 235 matches with 136 wins, guiding them to 10 finals and clinching 5 IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023, along with two Champions League T20 victories in 2010 and 2014.
When asked about what sets Dhoni apart from other captains, Mohit refrained from making direct comparisons but highlighted Dhoni's exceptional ability to assess situations and devise multiple solutions.
"I believe every captain has their unique style. It's often tempting to judge based on results. Each individual manages their players differently. What distinguishes him, in my view, is his extraordinary situational awareness. He can often find several ways to tackle a problem, adapting smartly to the circumstances," Mohit explained.
He also praised CSK's team culture, attributing the franchise's ongoing success to its strong environment. "CSK is a significant brand, and that reflects in their style of play. Many elements contribute to forming a great team. If I had to pinpoint the main factor, it would be the team environment," he remarked.
Having spent four to five years with CSK, Mohit noted that the franchise prioritizes fostering strong relationships within the team, which he believes is crucial for success.
"CSK has always aimed to create a group of genuinely good individuals who share a common mindset and focus on collective growth. After spending several years with CSK, I observed that the most positive aspect was the shared philosophy among everyone involved, from Mahi bhai to the management staff, including Stephen Fleming and the trainers: first win the dressing room, then win on the field," Mohit stated.
"Winning the dressing room is essential for establishing a winning environment. This mindset might be something other franchises lack, which could explain why they don't achieve the same level of sustained success as CSK. That's just my perspective. While it's hard to be certain, I firmly believe that CSK's core philosophy has always been to prioritize winning the dressing room before winning matches. The main goal is to maintain a healthy dressing room atmosphere," he concluded.
