Mohammed Shami's Future in Cricket: Determined to Prove Himself in IPL 2026
Shami's Career Status and Future Aspirations
Many observers believe that Mohammed Shami's international cricket career may be nearing its end, especially given his repeated exclusions from the national team across various formats. Once a key player for India, Shami has seen his position diminish, largely due to injuries that have hindered his return. However, his recent domestic performances indicate he is in good shape, having claimed 67 wickets during the 2025-2026 domestic season, which included the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Despite fans voicing their concerns over his absence from the Indian squad, the selection committee, led by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, has remained firm in their belief that Shami's fitness is still a concern, a claim Shami disputes.
At 35 years old, Shami may not have many years left in his cricketing career. With the Indian team seemingly moving on without him, thoughts of retirement could be on the horizon. However, when questioned about this, Shami was clear: he is not contemplating retirement. He is set to play for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2026, which he views as a significant chance to catch the selectors' attention. “I will retire when I feel tired. Right now, I’m not even considering it because such thoughts can be demotivating. If you think about retirement, it suggests you’re already fatigued or bored. I will leave cricket the day I wake up feeling that way. For now, I’m enjoying the game, and the results are encouraging,” Shami stated during an interview on The Shubhankar Mishra Show.
'I Will Give My All': Shami Ready to Meet LSG Expectations
Shami was acquired by Sunrisers Hyderabad for 10 crores in IPL 2025 but had a lackluster season, leading to his trade to LSG. His current focus is on delivering his best for the franchise. “As a bowler, I am committed to giving my all. I will fulfill my responsibilities and strive to meet the expectations placed upon me. While I cannot control luck, I can contribute through my attitude and determination. If Lucknow has faith in me, I will do my utmost. Ultimately, satisfaction is key when playing. I am not fixated on how much domestic cricket I’ve played; instead, I concentrate on maintaining my rhythm. If I can achieve that, I will start contemplating my future,” he added.
