Mohammad Kaif Urges Ajinkya Rahane to Evolve His Batting Style
Kaif's Advice to Rahane
Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has expressed his desire for Ajinkya Rahane, the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), to take inspiration from Virat Kohli and adapt his batting technique to remain competitive in the changing landscape of cricket. Kaif pointed out that Kohli faced challenges against spin bowling in the past but successfully revamped his approach by developing new shots to counter spinners effectively. He believes Rahane should also innovate his batting repertoire to challenge spin bowlers.
Kaif remarked, "Virat Kohli was once in a similar predicament. His strike rate against spinners was declining, but he silenced critics by attacking them and creating new shots. Currently, Rahane relies mainly on the slog sweep against spinners. He must enhance his power-hitting and expand his shot selection against spin, just as Kohli has done. Kohli serves as an excellent role model for all players, including Rahane."
Furthermore, Kaif noted that while Rahane had promising starts in the previous season, he often failed to convert those into substantial innings, typically scoring between 30 and 40 runs. "Rahane provided solid starts last season, consistently scoring around 30-40 runs in nearly every match, yet he did not earn a single Man of the Match award. This raises questions about his performance, especially since he tends to get dismissed when spinners are introduced," he added.
Future Leadership for KKR: Rinku Singh?
Kaif also suggested that KKR should consider Rinku Singh as a potential future captain. "It's time for KKR to develop Rinku Singh as their next captain. He is capable across all formats. Although he hasn't played Test cricket for India, his contributions in various formats are significant. Being from UP, I can attest to his impact on the state team. Many players score runs, but his have often come in crucial situations. He is ready for this responsibility," Kaif concluded.
