Mithali Raj Honored at BCCI Naman Awards 2026
New Delhi, March 16: Mithali Raj, the former captain of the Indian women's cricket team, expressed her gratitude towards mentors, coaches, and teammates after receiving the BCCI Lifetime Achievement Award for Women during the BCCI Naman Awards 2026.
The iconic cricketer remarked that this accolade signifies not just a personal achievement but also acknowledges the numerous individuals who have supported her throughout her cricketing journey.
“Many people have significantly influenced my career, not just my parents. Their support has been invaluable, along with that of various coaches and mentors. I have witnessed the transformation of women's cricket, and I must recognize all those who contributed,” Mithali stated.
She also expressed pride in the recent successes of Indian cricket, highlighting the impressive performances of both men's and women's teams, as well as the under-19 squads.
“In the past few years, Indian cricket—men, women, and under-19 teams—has excelled remarkably. As a former player, it fills me with pride to see Indian cricket thriving. I have long wished for Indian cricket to be dominant, and that time has finally arrived,” she added.
Mithali emphasized the steady growth of women's cricket and credited influential male cricketers for motivating female players.
“Progress takes time. Women's cricket has had its own path, just like men's cricket. However, we have drawn a lot of inspiration from male cricketers,” she noted.
She specifically acknowledged the mentorship she received from cricket legends Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar during her time at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and the Centre of Excellence (COE).
“I have gained inspiration from Rahul and Sachin. Whenever I encountered them at the NCA or COE, they were always willing to discuss batting and share valuable advice that benefited my game. This interaction between male and female cricketers is crucial as we strive to meet the standards set by men's cricket,” Mithali remarked.
Mithali was honored with the BCCI Lifetime Achievement Award for Women due to her remarkable contributions to women's cricket. Over her illustrious career spanning more than two decades, she became the highest run-scorer in women's ODIs, amassing 7,805 runs, and played a pivotal role in enhancing the visibility of women's cricket in India.
As captain, she led India to two ICC Women's World Cup finals, inspiring countless young cricketers and elevating the status of Indian women's cricket on the international stage.
